The Mayor San Pedro and San Pablo Festival is one of the most important for the peruvian community of Vito (Antabamba). It is celebrated on June 29 with songs, dances and a procession in honor of the saints.
The particularity of this party is the importance of horses and the system of "cargontes" which consists of the division into four traditional social groups, who take care of providing the material costs of the party for the whole community. They are divided in: Arrieros, Chacareros, Turoyapug y Altareros.
The comuneros, dressed in traditional costumes, prepare themselves for an imaginary journey through the commercial routes that from Los Andes led to the Amazon Rainforest or to the Coast: they prepare their horses, adorn them with colored fabrics and bells that bless with incense and alcohol.
In ancient times, pawns made long trips that could last for weeks or months to bring products used in rituals such as incense, caña, coca and exchange their animals.
The trip used to be very dangerous, and many of them did not return to their destination.
Despite the enormous expense, the festival of San Pedro or "Mula Mayor" resists the passing of time, celebrated each year in the community of Vito.
An event where Andean folklore mixes with the Catholic religion and the influences of the Spanish in an original and suggestive way.
